For women and children living in poverty, limited access to education robs them of opportunity.

In the Central African Republic (CAR), 3 in 4 women can’t read or write, and without these essential skills, they’re held back from working, providing for their children, and living a full life.

Education can change lives forever

Melanie, who lives in CAR, has seen firsthand the life-changing power of education for women and girls in her village.

She saw the lack of opportunities for women in her neighbourhood, and was determined to act. She invited unemployed women into her home to learn and support each other. With support from Tearfund and their local church, they set up a women’s literacy association where they could learn to read and write.

Unlocking opportunities

Guided by her faith and a passion to see women succeed, Melanie has helped many women find their way out of poverty through education.

With their new skills, they’ve started small businesses, enabling them to provide for their children. Now, they can give their children the opportunities they never had.
